There are various taping techniques that can be used with specific goals in mind depending on the type of injury. The goal of tape, overall, is to help stabilize/support a joint or the spine which decreases inflammation, reduces joint sheering forces, decreases pain, and improves mobility.
The three primary forms of tape include Kinesio tape, Leuko tape, and athletic tape.
Kinesio tape has stretch to it that can either facilitate or inhibit a muscle depending on our treatment goals and the specific injury.
Leuko tape is a rigid tape used to stabilize a joint and decrease sheering forces. Both of these forms of tape are water resistant (will last through swimming, sweating, and showering) and can be left on for 2-3 days.
Athletic tape is a rigid tape that is used for athletic events or practice to restrict movement of a joint and is then removed.
